Legislative Assistant

Location: Washington, DC

Overview: The Office of Senator-elect Alsobrooks is seeking an experienced individual to serve as a Legislative Assistant to assist on a number of different portfolios. The ideal candidate will be self-starting, detail-oriented, willing to take on any task, and able to juggle multiple assignments at one time. Candidates should be team players interested in growing their policy and legislative skills, working closely with a team to achieve results.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops and plans legislative initiatives and/or advise the Senator-elect on legislative issues
  • Develop potential legislative responses
  • Drafting legislative plans into legislative form
  • Gathering support for a bill or amendment from other Senators and/or interest groups
  • Formulate supporting arguments and responses to opposing arguments
  • Work with committees to mark up bills
  • Brief the Senator for floor work, committee work, work in the state and outside Senate-related activities
  • Authors background reports and memoranda
  • Monitor and analyze legislative developments within committee and on the Senate floor
  • Draft floor remarks for the Senator
  • Act as the Senator’s representative with constituents, special interest groups, other Senate offices and federal agencies on legislative matters

Duties may also include assisting with mail operations while the office is setting up. Applicants should have 2-4 years of previous Hill, campaign experience or other relevant policy expertise. Maryland ties are a plus and previous experience as a legislative correspondent or aide is required. 

Location and Work Environment: The office of Senator-elect Alsobrooks is hiring for this role in Washington D.C. This is a full-time, in-person position and successful candidates have the ability to work long and unpredictable hours, weekends and holidays as needed.
