As we near the start of the holiday season, I hope all of you are going to have some time to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. While I am certainly looking forward to Thanksgiving, and like all of you, I have much to be thankful for this year, I am also excited for what is to come in just a few short weeks.

The 2018 Inaugural Ceremony is on Monday, December 3rd at the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and will feature the official swearing-in of County Executive-Elect Angela Alsobrooks and all 11 members of the County Council. This is not a ticketed event, but seating will be on a first come, first served basis.

You can find more information about the ceremony below, but we also wanted to share some information regarding other events slated to take place the first weekend in December.

On Saturday, December 1st, the Inaugural Gala will take place at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center at National Harbor. There are still tickets remaining and for those of you interested in joining the celebration, please purchase your tickets now.

Additionally, on Sunday, December 2nd, from 5-7 p.m., there will be a prayer service for our County Executive-Elect at Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington. This is also a free event with seating on a first come, first served basis.

We hope that many of you will be able to join us for all or some of these events as we celebrate this historic occasion of having our first female County Executive.

FAQs for 2018 Inauguration Ceremony

– Do you anticipate a large crowd?
Yes, it is highly anticipated that large crowds will come to witness the Inaugural Ceremony. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes, allot ample time for free parking and security check-in when entering the Arena.


– Where should I park and will I have to pay?
Ample and Accessible free parking is available at the Arena. The Arena is on THE BUS public transportation route which is another option for travel. Please be advised that logistical coordination to ride THE BUS will be the sole responsibility of the attendee.

– What time will doors open to the Arena?

Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the ceremony will promptly commence at 10:00 a.m. The County Executive and County Council Members must be sworn-in by noon in accordance with the County’s Charter. Entrance may be delayed to the public, if entering the arena once the swearing-in portion is underway.

– If there are no tickets for entry to the Arena, how would I secure a seat?

Registration is not required nor is this a ticketed event. Public seating is on a first come, first serve basis.

– Will different languages other than English be spoken at the ceremony?

French and Spanish interpretation services will be available.

– Can you purchase food?

Concessions will NOT be available for purchase.
